WILLEMSTAD — Exactly one week ago, the MFK held their first party-assembly in the WTC. Although only sixty people showed up for the conference, party-chairman and State member Amerigo Thodé is pleased with the turnout and the conclusions of the assembly. According to Thodé, the MFK has pointed out several main issues, which the government will give priority in the coming period. The assembly of last Saturday – held between 10:00 and 18:00 – was the first party-assembly of government party MFK. Discussions were held on several main themes and reviewed in study groups afterwards. In these study groups, resolutions were adopted which eventually were presented to party-leader and Premier Gerrit Schotte in a general meeting. Only sixty people or so had shown up for the assembly; according to Thodé this was due to the fact that the assembly had already been postponed twice and was held on a day when numerous other activities took place.
One of the most important conclusions of the party-assembly was that the government should give priority to economic development. This is to occur simultaneously with the increase of the island’s population. In due course, the current population of approx. 150,000 should increase to 200,000. “The economy must continue to grow. The government should do more than arrange for employment. The economy must diversify. The growth of the economy will lead to more activity, jobs and, more income for the government.” Other subjects discussed during the party-assembly were the possibilities to offer more youngsters a job; infrastructure and the future of the Isla-refinery, said Thodé. At the end of the assembly, participants adopted several resolutions, which they hope to realize.
