WILLEMSTAD — More than 250 participants from 100 telecom companies in the Caribbean area are expected on Curaçao in February 2013 to attend one of the largest conferences, according to Curaçao Technology Exchange NV (Ctex).

It took several months of lobbying to have the seventh annual Capacity Caribbean Conference of Jamaica held on Curaçao. This conference will take place on February 14th and 15th at the Hyatt Resort.

Capacity Media choose Curaçao because of the recent increase in market activities and liberalization in the telecom field, such as the arrival of Ctex and the new possibilities for international operators in the region, said Rhian Collinson, head of conferences for Capacity Media in Great Britain.

With the opening of Ctex’ hi-tech Tier-IV-datacenter soon Curaçao could become the largest carrier-neutral network access point (NAP) of the region, where international carriers can be connected with each other. In short, a new international hub instead of establishing connections with Miami or other international points, said Ctex-director Anthony de Lima.

Director of Curaçao Tourism Board, Ghatim Kabbara, said the conference is a milestone ‘for Curaçao’s vision as leader for destinations of events in the region’. He also mentioned Curaçao being a business hub in the region for many years also plays a role.
