WILLEMSTAD — Earlier this week the Parliament of Curaçao adopted a motion that condemns a statement from the Venezuelan delegation in Parlatino, the Latin American Parliament. The statement mentions a coup d’état took place on Curaçao and that an illegal and unconstitutional government acceded to power.

The item was placed on the agenda of a public meeting of the Parliament at the request of PAR-parliamentarian Pedro Atacho. According to Atacho, the Parliament cannot simply ignore this statement; Curaçao must give a strong signal that the interim-government was appointed legally and that it can count on a democratic majority in the Parliament. In the motion that was adopted unanimously at the end of the meeting the introducers wrote that the statement from the Venezuelan delegation is an insult to the people of Curaçao and to Curaçao as a self-governing country within the Kingdom.

Incorrect information

The motion also mentions that the statement is based on incorrect information because the Parliament of Curaçao requested the governor to appoint an interim-government until the installation of a new cabinet after the elections of October 19. The motion criticizes the fact that the statement was sent to various international organizations and governments. This was reason for the Parliament to send all countries that had received the statement a letter confirming that Curaçao is not being re-colonized by the Netherlands. These countries will also receive a Spanish translation of the letter from the governor that describes the decision leading to the installation of an interim-government, while Premier Stanley Betrian is requested to send a letter to all embassies of the Kingdom explaining the situation on Curaçao.

The Parliament adopted the motion on the nod.
