THE HAGUE — Minister of Foreign Affairs, Frans Timmermans, expects to sign a Memorandum of Understanding soon with the Venezuelan authorities on strengthening the economic bonds. Timmermans mentioned this during the debate on the new relation between the EU and the LGO-countries.“Although Venezuela is the largest neighboring country of the Kingdom we have few economic bonds with Venezuela. This country applauded the ensuing conversations. We are now working on a Memorandum of Understanding that also involves Curaçao and Aruba”, said Timmermans.
There are also conversations with the authorities of Cuba, he said, following questions from Lower Chamber members on the role Curaçao, Aruba and St. Maarten could play in the relation between the Netherlands and the European Union on the one hand and South America on the other hand. Timmermans stated that the interest of the Caribbean countries lies in the ‘political cultural infrastructure’. “They speak the same language and know their way around in Venezuela and Columbia but also in the Netherlands and Europe.”
