THIS IS about ‘La Golondrina’, one of the most beautiful Mexican songs ever written. After Emperor Maximilian I, formerly Archduke of Austria, had ruled Mexico for four years, his army was defeated by the forces of Benito Juárez. Maximilian was taken prisoner and executed by a firing squad. As a last request he asked not to be shot in the face. Strangely enough, he also wanted to hear one more mariachi song: ‘La Golondrina’.

Narciso Cerradel Sevilla was a doctor and composer. While fighting on the Mexican side he was captured by the invading French forces and deported to France. During preparation of his departure he wrote ‘La Golondrina’, a wonderful song of farewell.

The first among several verses goes as follows:

Veloz y fatigada

La golondrina

Que de aquí se va

Por sí en el viento

Se hallará extraviada

Buscando abrigo

Y no lo encontrará

I think this is the third or fourth verse:

Ave querida

Amada peregrina

Mi corazón

Al tuyo acercare (?)

Tierna golondrina

Recordaré

Mi patria y lloraré

As a great amante of mariachi songs myself, I perhaps might have made a request similar to Maximilian’s.
